Dear Parents of Kindergarten Students,
As we approach the middle of the school year, it is common practice for the English Department to asses each and every student individually on his/her reading skills that had been acquired from the start of the school year to the present. Each student will be assessed by the Chairperson of English Department in the second week of January. The results of this assessment will be available to each family via mail. You will be fully informed on your child’s progress in relation to his/her classmates and to the
entire Kindergarten population of our school. Students will be graded on reading fluency and reading comprehension.
Please note that a similar assessment will also be administered in June. By the end of the Kindergarten Program, we expect our
students to read 50 words per minute. Therefore, the English Department will administer the Speed Reading Test to all students individually. The required number of words read per minute never stays the same from year to year. We derive this number based upon the enrolled kindergarten group of the current year. Based upon the reading assessments, three types of reading levels
will be determined: (Developing, Average, and Advanced)
The results of both, January and June assessments will help the school administration to determine appropriate class placement for each student entering Grade 1 in the upcoming school year 2015-2016. I can’t stress enough that reading skills are the most crucial skills that each student will acquire in Kindergarten since these same reading skills will promote each student’s learning success in all academic areas. Please assist us in teaching our children by conducting daily read aloud times in duration of 15 to 25 minutes. On behalf of the English Department, I would like to thank all parents who are partaking an active role in their child’s learning. Please remember that together we are a strong team that ensures our children’s success in learning.
